JackRabbit+CherryBomb

About

JackRabbit+Cherrybomb evolved out of a project I started kicking around in the summer of 2020, when I had really given up, in a lot of ways. You were there too, you can imagine.

Here's how I would describe the comic: It's a psychedelic jewel thief romance-adventure. It's an interactive, globetrotting intrigue storyline, and also an intimate and erotic historical queer romance. It's the story of two people on the wrong side of every line who have also made the mistake of being in their 20s during the 1970s. It's over-the-top, and absurd, and it's spilling its drink on the sofa of real history. It's pure junk-food fun for those with pretentious taste in garbage. It's funny, and it's also kind of a bummer, and it's pretty awesome!

If I remember right, the original plan was to do something silly and short with these two very flat jewel thief characters I had in mind; one was this short girl with rollerskates and red and black hair, and the other was this jerk of a twink coasting by on the strength of his cheekbones. And they love each other. They don't know how to live a life that allows them that. But they love each other. Simple and fun, and it should be done in six months. HM.

The first few attempts at making something out of them didn't really stick, but I hung onto the characters, and every year or so I'd make a new book about them. They changed a lot. So did I, I think, because over the next few years I rather found my footing in real life, and that ended up being a lot more important. It took all that time, between 2020 and 2024, to figure out what I really wanted to do with these characters, and this is me, trying to do it.

There are plenty of reasons it arrived at this place, but they're mostly selfish. I wanted to contribute a romance between a trans guy and a cis woman, sue me. I wanted to paint a picture with all the colors which the joy of finding my own love has shown to me. It's about many things. I believe it's about finding joy and spontaneity and beauty when the world is cold. It's a story about two boomers (hah) but I can only really write about how it feels to be a zoomer right now.

It's a deeply self-indulgent story if that wasn't obvious. It's the product of indulging almost every creative whim in my path, and the result is a dense, graphic, slightly pornographic, musical, meandering love story full of asides, appendices, footnotes, and puzzles.

I'm happy with the way it's turning out!
